The Furman Women’s Soccer Team played in the Southern Conference title game on Nov. 7, 2021. The Lady Paladins lost a close battle with SoCon rival Samford, with the final score being 2-4. The Lady Paladins entered the game as the #2 seed in the SoCon while the Bulldogs entered as a #1 seed. Furman entered the season and Southern Conference Championship as the defending Conference Champions, and despite facing the Samford stalwart, were poised to repeat the good play of last year.
The game had a quick pace and high tempo right from the start. Samford struck first scoring at the 6:10 mark. The star Bulldog Mary Raymond proved to be trouble for Furman all game. However, the Lady Paladins responded quickly at 25:19 with a goal of their own. Furman kept their tempo and momentum going with another goal scored at 35:35 by Jasmine Greene. Unfortunately for the Paladins, Samford responded in kind, and then some. Samford rattled off three consecutive goals with no Furman response. The goals came at 45:52, 56:09, and 62:23.
Furman took 12 shots total, seven of them were on goal. Samford took 15 shots total with 11 of them on goal. Samford also had more corner kicks than the Lady Paladins, 6-5. The two Furman goals were scored by Hannah Farr and Jasmine Greene. Samford goals were scored by Mary Raymond (2), Ella Simpson, and Alyssa Frazier.
Furman had three players finish on the Tournament SoCon Team with the conclusion of the season. Camryn Bolick, Hannah Farr, and Faith Hauberg represented Furman and were honored on the All-Tournament Team. The MVP was Mary Raymond; thus, Furman put up an excellent fight against a strong Samford team.
Despite the Conference tournament loss, Furman had an impressive fall season. The Lady Paladins had a six game win streak heading into the conference final. Furman’s season ended at 12-6-1 overall while Samford improved to 15-3-2.
