Furman Golf has boasted its fair share of some of golf’s greatest players over the last few decades. Players such as Natalie Srinivasan, Keller Harper, Dottie Pepper, Betsy King, Brad Faxon, and Cindy Davis have made their mark on not just Furman, but the entire golf world. Furman University is one of only two schools in the country to have a Haskins Award winner, and an ANNIKA Award winner: the awards given to the best male and female college players in the country, respectively. The University’s golf accomplishments are nothing short of legendary, and they will continue to be so with the new installment of a state-of-the-art practice facility.
On Sept. 1, the University announced construction plans for the Davis Faxon Training Facility at REK with the following announcement: “Furman is set to begin construction this fall on the new Davis Faxon Training Facility at REK. This 100% donor-funded facility, which will be utilized by both the Paladin men’s and women’s golf programs, is named in honor of former Paladin golf greats Cindy Davis and Brad Faxon, who provided lead gifts in the capital campaign.”
Davis is a member of Furman’s Athletic Hall of Fame, former President of Nike Golf, and VP of Golf Channel. Faxon, also a member of Furman Athletic Hall of Fame, is a Haskins Award winner and Payne Stewart Award winner, as well as an 8-time winner on the PGA tour. Notably, Faxon was part of the race to save Furman golf when the University defunded the program in 2014.
The facility will feature “six hitting stations in three covered bays, an indoor putting studio, a club repair shop, plus a workout area. Office suites and locker rooms for both programs will be renovated, and the building will feature new [team meeting rooms]” the University announced. This new facility will attract substantial new talent and generate much excitement for past, current, and future Furman golfers. Current player Nathan Norfleet said, “This new facility is a testament to all the thousands of hours Furman golfers have put in day in and day out for the past several years. Men’s golf will climb to the top of the college golf rankings within the next few years. The men’s team continues to break records. Coach Davidson is a key part of this. He helps develop players for four years and bring in talented, competitive, and selfless players. Furman golf is here to stay, and Furman golf will be competing in National Championships soon.”
The plan for completion for the new facility is set for Spring of 2021.
