The Paladin women’s soccer team (4-4) continued their win streak in the first game of the men’s and women’s soccer doubleheader on Sunday, Sept. 8. The Dins shut out the USC Upstate Spartans 2-0.
Furman led USC Upstate 6-1 in shots and 3-0 in shots on goal at halftime. The Paladins had multiple opportunities to score in the half, but they could not connect on shots.
The second half was a different story, with Furman coming out and firing on all cylinders. Senior forward Valentina Mosquera, who was tripped inside the box, broke the scoring drought on the ensuing penalty kick for her first goal of the year.
Less than five minutes after Mosquera’s goal, Furman scored again at the 66:39 mark. Junior midfielder Ellie Hermann booted a corner kick to the top of the box, where it bounced around for a while until sophomore forward Maddie Massie knocked the ball in for a goal to extend Furman’s lead to 2-0.
The Dins finished the game with a 19-3 lead in total shot attempts and a 9-2 advantage in shots on goal. Senior midfielder Ashlyn Goila and Mosquera each tallied an assist during the game. Fifth-year Nieva Gaither led Furman in shots with four, while sophomore midfielder Jenny Jacobson attempted three shots.
Freshman goalkeeper Reese DeJong and fifth-year Addison Corn each had 45 minutes in net for the Paladins and combined for the shutout. Corn had two saves.
“We played a strong second half again today and were able to take advantage of a couple chances,” Furman head coach Andrew Burr said after the game. “We continue to improve and develop as we get closer to Southern Conference play, and that is our goal as a team.”
Furman’s women’s soccer team hopes to continue their win streak on Sunday, Sept. 15 as they host Tennessee Tech on Senior Day. Kick-off is tabbed for 2 p.m. at Stone Stadium. ESPN+ will also be broadcasting the game for those unable to attend in person.
