On a crisp October afternoon in 2002, Furman quarterback Billy Napier took the field against arch-rival Appalachian State. With victory hanging in the balance, he led a 73-yard touchdown drive to put the Paladins ahead 15-14. But, rather than settling for the extra point, Furman went for a bold two-point conversion. Napier’s pass was then infamously intercepted and returned for a touchdown, resulting in an Appalachian State victory. Although it was far from one of the brightest moments in Furman sports history, it was the beginning of a new journey for one of Furman’s most distinguished alumnus, Billy Napier.
His successful career as a player for the Paladins led him to take up coaching, which involved many trials and tribulations. This path culminated in him becoming the head coach of the University of Florida football team.

Napier’s leadership abilities, which he learned at Furman, earned him a graduate assistant role at Clemson in 2003. He then climbed the coaching ranks, stopping at South Carolina State and Clemson, where he became offensive coordinator under Dabo Swinney in 2009. At Clemson, Napier recruited and developed Clemson legend Tajh Boyd, who helped galvanize the early beginnings of the Tigers’ success in the 2010s. However, after a disappointing 2010 season, Napier was let go.
Rather than another setback, it became a launching pad. In 2011, Alabama legend and head coach Nick Saban hired him as an analyst, recognizing Napier’s keen attention to detail. Returning as Alabama’s wide receivers coach from 2013 to 2016, he recruited and developed future NFL stars such as Calvin Ridley and Jerry Jeudy.
In 2018, Napier landed his first head coaching job at Louisiana-Lafayette, transforming the Ragin’ Cajuns into a powerhouse with three 10-win seasons, four Sun Belt division titles, and a Sun Belt championship while sending multiple players to the NFL.
Napier was then named Florida’s head coach in 2021. His first two seasons were challenging, but in 2024, the Gators showed great progress, upsetting ranked opponents #22 Louisiana State University and #9 Ole Miss en route to an 8-5 record against one of the toughest schedules in the nation.
As the 2025 season approaches, Napier, backed by star quarterback DJ Lagway, looks to take the Gators even further. Despite wearing blue and orange on Saturdays, he still leads with a heart of Furman purple.
