Furman’s very own Badminton Club is a hidden gem on campus, often slipping under the radar of other fun activities and organizations.
The origins of badminton began over 2,000 years ago in ancient civilizations such as Greece, China, Japan, India and Thailand. Common misconceptions give credit to England for inventing the modern version of the game, but it was actually taken from India, according to the International Olympic Committee. Originally called “battledore,” the game evolved into its modern form in British India during the 19th century. Needing only a racket, shuttlecock, net and drive to win, this simple yet fast-paced game is the foundation of Furman’s Badminton Club.
The Badminton Club is led by a dedicated group of students: President Will Hutson ‘26, Vice-President Maria Curley ‘26, Treasurer Foster Campbell ‘26 and Secretary Stephen McLean ‘26. This team is responsible for running the club, working out logistics and creating a welcome atmosphere for all players.

“I wanted to give back what the founders of the club gave me: a fun environment that encouraged friendship and growth,” Huston said about his motivation for being a club executive.
While the focus is on badminton, this club also fosters unique bonds. Curley describes the atmosphere as casual and relaxed — everyone there is excited to get to know each other. This helps create a comfortable environment where players, ranging in age from seniors to freshmen and varying in skill level, get to interact and form friendships while playing badminton.
This community is one of Campbell’s favorite aspects of the club. Some of his fondest memories involve post-practice social events during his freshman year, and while he and his friends have since gotten busier, badminton always offers an avenue to reconnect. As new students join, Campbell enjoys welcoming them into this environment.
On March 22, the Furman Badminton Club took a trip to the University of South Carolina in Columbia to compete in a doubles tournament. While the duo Hutson and Curley came in second, everyone at the tournament had a blast.
“Being able to play in a tournament against different people of a similar skill level and learning from them and being able to simply appreciate good play was probably the most fun I’ve had as a member of the club,” McLean said.
“Whether you are great at this game, or you’ve never played before, there is a place for you at this club, and the members will help you get better!” Hutson said.
The Badminton Club is open to everyone. Practices are every Wednesday from 6-7 p.m. and Thursday from 9-10 p.m. in the Physical Activities Center. Follow @furman_club_badminton on Instagram for more info.
