Let’s Talk About Stress

Feeling down? Stressed? Anxious? Sounds like the perfect time to indulge in a little self-care!

Let’s admit it, we are all like this puppy sometimes…and that’s ok! But in times like this, it’s important to indulge in a little TLC!

Are you overwhelmed and exhausted from what feels like a never ending load of homework and studying? Well, you are not alone. As we approach the one month mark of classes, workload has increased, late night cramming sessions become more frequent and stress level has risen. Between assignments, classes and meetings, it often feels hard to find a second for yourself.

Our hectic schedules make it much too easy for us to forgo self-care and say, “I am just too busy to get that work out in,” or “I can’t get dinner with friends tonight because I need to work.” But oftentimes, what we need in frenetic times is exactly what we often overlook — little moments dedicated to our mental and physical well-being.

So, here is a gentle reminder for the day: do something that puts a smile on your face. That something can be different for everyone – working out, meditating, journaling or watching an episode of your favorite TV show. Personally, when I get overwhelmed I love to make a good matcha, play happy music and just dance it out. Even the smallest things can make a world of a difference.

If you are looking for suggestions, I would recommend the album Chilombo by Jhene Aiko. Her soothing voice in conjunction with melodic sound bowls puts a unique and beautiful spin to her music that is sure to help you chill out and de-stress.

The album is designed to unlock different chakras in the body. If you are unfamiliar with the word “chakra,” it means wheel or cycle in Sanskrit and refers to our body’s main energy points. To unleash this inner force, Aiko incorporates crystal sound bowls into her music that work to balance and relax the body when gently struck. Sound bowls not only offer a beautiful hum, but they are also linked to reduced tension, anxiety, and depression – something us college students know all too well. So, whether you are in need of a serious music therapy jam session or just looking for new music, check out Chilombo on Spotify. You will not regret it.

So, I will leave you with one last remark: whether you take 5 minutes or half an hour, spend time caring for yourself. Whether its running around the lake, making tea or listening to music, remember it is the little things that can make all the difference.
