Letter from the Editor

Last Monday, Housing and Residence Life sent out an email with the subject, “Action Required: Mold and Mildew Prevention.”

The corresponding form on the portal listed causes of mold and steps that students can take to prevent microbial growth. By providing students with information, the university is taking a critical step to spread awareness that will hopefully ameliorate mold issues. However, it is important to acknowledge causes of mold growth that are beyond a student’s control. As I reported, the weakness of the bathroom fan is an example of a structural flaw that contributes to higher moisture levels that can cause mold.

Many students I talked to were confused by the form’s signature request and have not signed it. While the email says that students should “sign the document to ensure that you have read the information,” the instruction of the signature is “sign to give consent.” This is semantically unclear. While the email indicated that there is “action required,” the form itself contradicts this instruction with the option to exit if “you do not agree.” The form needs more clarity so that students can understand what they are signing.

The Paladin has reached out to Housing for information about the Mold and Mildew Prevention Form this week and are awaiting a response.– Scotty Bryan    Editor in Chief, The Paladin
