Furman Soccer Continues Legacy of SoCon Success

Furman Soccer Continues Legacy of SoCon Success

Both the Furman men’s and women’s soccer teams are known for their success in Southern Conference play and this season is no different. Following two outstanding 2019 regular seasons, both soccer teams look to continue their victorious SoCon legacies as they enter the postseason.

The women’s team claimed their ninth SoCon regular season title with a 5-3 win against The Citadel on Oct. 25. The season ended a couple days later with an 0-2 loss to Mercer on Oct. 27, leaving the Paladins with an impressive 12-5-1 overall record, and a record of 7-1-1 in SoCon play. A week later, the Paladins bounced back with a 3-0 win against Wofford on Nov. 3, the 200th victory for head coach Andrew Burr, which advanced the team to the SoCon semifinals.

Multiple players were honored following the end of the regular season. Forward Jasmine Greene was named SoCon Women’s Soccer Freshman of the Year, as well as receiving first team All-SoCon honors. Sophomore midfielder Isabella Gutierrez also earned first team All-SoCon honors. Forward Kyndal Anderson, defender Erin O’Hearn and goalkeeper Kellsey Weaver were named as second team all-league selections. Anderson and Greene were also named to the SoCon all-freshman team.

The Paladins claimed a hard-fought 1-0 win against UNC Greensboro in the SoCon Semifinals last Friday to advance to the Finals. PLAY THE FINALS ON SUNDAY, WILL ADD MORE AFTER THAT GAME.

The men’s team claimed their league-record 20th SoCon regular season title with a 2-1 win over Belmont on Nov. 2, the team’s senior night. The win led the Paladins to clinch the No. 1 seed for the 2019 SoCon Men’s Soccer Championship. The Paladins ended the season with an overall record of 11-6-1 and a record of 5-1-0 in SoCon play.

Multiple players have also stepped up and helped the men’s team reach their 20th regular season title. Red-shirt senior forward Connor Hubbard was named to the College Soccer News National Team of the Week following his impressive play in recent weeks. Hubbard scored the game-winning go-ahead goal in the Paladins’ 2-1 win against Belmont. Senior Rocky Guerra was named SoCon Men’s Soccer Offensive Player of the month for October with four goals and three assists in six games throughout the month of October.
