1. Walter White and Jesse Pinkman from “Breaking Bad”

One of the most topical costumes this season is also a couple’s costume, and who doesn’t love coordinating outfits? Now that the “Breaking Bad” fans have had some time to grieve and reflect after the series finale at the end of September, many will be commemorating the departed show this Halloween. One major draw of this costume is the variety of options in creating it. If you can find two yellow hazmat suits and gas masks, you’re set! If you can’t, never fear because a pair of khakis and a button down shirt for the Walt in your pairing with a baggy hoodie and jeans and knit beanie for your Jesse will also get the message across. Those who really want to go for it will dress as early-cooking Walt, i.e. a pair of tighty-whities and an apron.

2. A government employee or some kind of visual gag costume about the shutdown

Another topical costume with many possibilities. No matter the brilliance in execution, this idea will be pretty played out by this weekend.

3. Miley Cyrus

Noticing the topical trend yet? Doubtless, you have already heard one of your friends talking about dressing up as America’s favorite twerking hot mess. Or perhaps you’re planning to do so yourself. Couple’s costume variation: your partner dresses as Robin Thicke in a jail-stripe suit. A quick word of caution, though — put some baby powder between you and those flesh-toned vinyl hot pants because that is probably not a breathable material, and give your tongue a rest from being stuck out between photo sessions.

4. “Despicable Me” minions

If the multitude of Pinterest tutorials on DIY-ing this costume are any indication, lots of people will be donning overalls this Halloween. This costume’s main advantage is that it’s easy to throw together, as long as you can find those overalls.

5. A skimpy outfit and animal ears

This list would be incomplete without this classic, now a popular movie reference. Because “I’m a mouse. Duh!”
