This is a great time of year for outdoor activities as the temperatures cool off and the leaves begin to change. Weekends are ideal for day hikes and camping trips, and even a few hours after class during the week gives a chance to take a study break and enjoy a breathtaking view. Jones Gap and Caesar’s Head State Parks are within 40 minutes of campus and are the perfect settings for a variety of activities.

Jones Gap boasts more than 30 miles of trails, ranging from a half mile to 10 miles one way, and designated camping areas throughout the park. Rainbow Falls in particular is a worthwhile 2.2 mile hike. Fishing for brook, rainbow, and brown trout also provides a special attraction along the Middle Saluda and the creeks located within the park. Jones Gap is open from 9 a.m. to an hour before dark, year round. There is a small trail access fee, $2 for adults during the summer and $5 beginning in October.

Caesar’s Head State Park has a large granite outcrop with beautiful vistas of the upcountry and Piedmont. There are 12 trails covering more than 30 miles, many of which lead to waterfalls and vistas. Raven Cliff Falls is a moderate 2 mile trail ending at a picturesque 420 foot waterfall. Devil’s Kitchen is also worth visiting. This steep path of stairs is wedged between two granite walls and ends at the only view of Caesar’s Head to be found in the park. Camping is allowed in certain areas of the park, and there are also 24 remote backcountry camping sites perfect for a weekend backpacking trip. Caesar’s Head is open from 9 a.m. to an hour before dark, year round. The trail access fee is $2 for adults.

If you have a bit more time on your hands, consider going an hour and a half from Furman to Turtleback Falls, near Brevard, N.C. A popular freshman hall trip, Turtleback Falls is a great hike with an added element of fun. The waterfall itself runs over a rounded rock and many people choose to slide down the rock into the water below. This is a great activity for the few remaining warm days of summer.

With classes just beginning and the seasons turning, now may be the perfect time to take an afternoon off or a weekend break before academic life gets too busy. Be sure to explore Jones Gap and Caesar’s Head and the many other outdoors adventures spots around Greenville. You won’t be disappointed with what you find.
