On Saturday, Jan. 17, Wofford College prevailed at Timmons Arena 74-70 and handed the Furman Men’s Basketball team their second Southern Conference loss of the season, dropping the team’s overall record to a still stout 13-6.
Furman’s freshman guard Alex Wilkins led the team with 19 points, supplemented by a solid outing by freshman guard Abijah Franklin, who contributed 14 points. Wofford’s scoring was led by sophomore guard Kahmare Holmes and junior guard Nils Machowski, who tallied 20 points each for the Terriers.
The game’s peak for Furman was a Franklin steal into a three-point buzzer-beater shot to close out the first half, expanding the Paladin lead to a comfortable seven points. Apart from this moment, both teams notched underwhelming marks from three-point range, as Furman managed 28% and Wofford 27% of their attempts from range.
The Paladins led for the vast majority of game time and held a 13-point lead with just under 10 minutes remaining on the clock.
The rival Terriers, however, exploded for a 17-0 run over the next six minutes of game time, capitalizing on Paladin miscues, missed shots, turnovers, and fouls.
Wofford’s starting five had a solid game all-around, with four of their five starters tallying double-digit point totals. Freshman forward Brian Sumpter dominated the paint with 14 rebounds, far ahead of the second-leading rebounder of the game, which was Furman’s freshman forward Cole Bowser with eight.
The Terriers were able to win in the details of the game, and methodically close out a win after a late-game foul sequence fizzled out for the Paladins.
This most recent entry in the two schools’ basketball rivalry brings their all-time head-to-head records to an even .500 at 38-38. Furman will have an opportunity for redemption in the upcoming rematch at Wofford on Feb. 21, with tip-off set for 7 p.m.
The Dins will hope to better their in-conference play when they return home to Timmons Arena on Thursday, Jan. 29, facing off Samford.
